In Maroua, Community Advocacy Leads to a Concrete Response in Support of Sanitation

Following advocacy efforts led by CADELCO with the Urban Community of Maroua, waste bins were provided to community actors to support their actions in hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness. This represents a concrete response to a concern raised at the local level.

The advocacy carried out by CADELCO helped mobilize material support intended to strengthen the interventions of Health Clubs and Local Community Health Committees (CLSCs). The waste bins made available to them constitute an additional tool to support their community-based actions among the population.

On the ground, these community actors play an important role in raising awareness and mobilizing populations around hygiene and sanitation issues. Thanks to this equipment, they now have a concrete means of supporting actions aimed at improving waste management and fighting against illegal dumping sites.

However, the issue goes beyond cleanliness alone. Poor waste management and the accumulation of stagnant water can create conditions favorable to mosquito proliferation. By contributing to a cleaner environment, sanitation activities therefore contribute to malaria prevention efforts at community level.

This approach also illustrates the role that civil society organizations can play in advocacy with non-traditional health stakeholders. In this case, the Urban Community of Maroua was approached to provide a response to an issue that directly affects the living conditions and health of the population.

Through this initiative, CADELCO and community actors demonstrate that community engagement can go beyond awareness-raising to contribute to obtaining concrete solutions. In Maroua, a concern identified on the ground has thus found an initial response through dialogue and advocacy, benefiting sanitation efforts and the fight against malaria.
